Malaysia's central bank will introduce a new series of coins early next year to replace the current 20-year-old series, said its governor yesterday.
Meanwhile, commemorative coins (above) based on the new series go on sale today.
'The design motifs were crafted in the form of nature, flora and fauna and traditional handicraft which is found in Malaysia,' Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz said at the launch of 500,000 sets of commemorative coins yesterday.
Designed by an unnamed Malaysian, the new silver and yellow 50 sen, 20 sen, 10 sen and 5 sen coins are smaller and lighter than those they are replacing. They incorporate improved features to foil counterfeiters.
The edge designs will reportedly enable the public and the visually impaired to distinguish the different denominations.
Dr Zeti also revealed that the new fourth series banknotes will be launched by Prime Minister Najib Razak in September.
